The Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, on Tuesday confirmed the 2 month ban on fishing.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings has commended the Government for imposing a 2 months ban on fishing by industrial trawlers in Ghana’s coastal boundaries and described it as a good fishing practice.
He also added to it that, though the decision by the government will go a long way to help the fishing industry, there is the need for government to check and limit the over- proliferation of industrial trawlers over the past years which brought about the depletion of fish in our waters and almost brought the local small-scale fishing to its knees.
The former President added that there has been a lot of inappropriate and fraudulent actions taken place in the industry and it is important that such activities must be investigated to bring sanity in the fishing industry.
